The Captain's Log

The Captain's journeys, latest adventures and other artistic inquiries.

Today I was truly enlighted. I took the chance after missing prometheus and went around the corner to a MARVELLOUS Matisse Exhibition. Brought all the way from Baltimore, I had the undescribeable pleasure to see pieces by the masters that I pursue with my heart.

Breathtaking to finally stand in front of a Renoir, Picasso(who I admire despite not being a great fan)  and Paul Gauguin .

Afterwards I tried to focus the influence and even colored some sketches. For the first time ever have I taken advantage of my rough seemingly purposeless lines and used them to describe different textures, wrinkles and even facial features.

I tried what I can only describe as “accidental cubism” in which I would follow a person as he/she walked by, bu insead of referencing for a stil pose, I drew the angle of things as they appeared. I would star with a 3/4 head, as the person drifted by I´d be halfway through a chest also in 3/4 giving the shoulders in profile.  By the time I got to the legs, I draw their back walking away from me.
